we were on a break!

A FRESH UPDATE

I've taken the past year+ off socials. Since then I’ve just been spending extra time with my family, friends, expanding SKINxErin, hanging with my Sisterhood community (consider this your standing invite to one of our Coffee Hours), and I’m the happiest I’ve been in probably a decade.

I don’t know when I’ll come back to social media, but I’m excited for whenever that is!  In the meantime, scroll down for a few personal pics from the past month that definitely would have made an appearance on my grid!

Title

If you’ve never used an oil based skincare line before there could only be 4 possible reasons why. Either…

#1:

You’re afraid it will break you out or make your skin greasy.

#2:

You don’t see the need or benefit of putting oil on your skin.

#3:

You tried a skincare oil once and it did you dirty.

#4:

You feel too overwhelmed by all the options out there.

Let's start with #3...

If this is you, I’m sorry. That’s a drag.

Just guessing, but I bet it was an oil blend 🙄. Most brands sell blends… I hate blends.

Most brands think you, the consumer, want to be wow’d by all the different ingredients they can put in one bottle, and to some degree that’s true. Who doesn’t like to be wow’d?!

But you know what’s the biggest WOW?

A product that actually does what it says it’s going to do.

Here’s what’s important to understand about oils… Oils come in all different textures and viscosities. Sandy, smooth, thick, thin, wet, dry, etc.. and as with every skincare ingredient, they also come in varying degrees of comedogenicity (how likely an ingredient is to clog pores)

All that to say, the odds of an oil blend containing comedogenic oils (pore clogging) are high, as are the odds of a blend sitting on top of your skin instead of absorbing into it.

If you decide to give skincare oils another shot, and I hope you do, try a single ingredient non-comedogenic dry oil like Hydrating Beauty Oil

If you fall into category 2 and just don’t get what the fuss is about, here’s a quick run down…

✅Plant oils are proven to repair the skin barrier.

✅They’re also proven to protect the skin barrier.

✅They are deeply hydrating (can penetrate deeper than lotions or creams)

✅Non-comedogenic oils actually regulate oil production, making skin more balanced, not greasy.

✅They reduce inflammation

✅They repair crepey skin

✅They reduce redness

✅They give skin a healthy glow

✅They’ll heal a sunburn in no time

And they feel amazing.

If you fall into category 1..

I totally get it. I struggled with acne most of my life.

Even though I was uncharacteristically optimistic when trying my first skincare oil, I was also NERVOUS. I thought it was too good to be true and waited with bated breath for the biggest breakout of my life… but instead I said goodbye to breakouts for good.

Here’s what I wish I would have known…

1️⃣ Select oils are non-comedogenic, meaning they will not clog your pores.. At SKINxErin, our oils are 0 on the comedogenic scale.

2️⃣ OIL BREAKS DOWN OIL. Using a non-comedogenic facial oil actually helps to unclog pores by breaking down excess sebum, and helps to regulate oil production, making skin less oily.

3️⃣ Oil feels realllllllly good on acne prone skin. Acne prone skin can hurt sometimes, kinda feels like a perpetual sunburn. So it’s nice when you find a product that feels amazing to put on, and one that really soothes the skin.

#4... Here’s what I’ll say about feeling overwhelmed..

Keep it simple, and the new shiny object is NEVER it, I promise.

Over-consumption isn’t good for your brain, or your skin.

STICK WITH THE CLASSICS.

No one ever looked back and said “ya know, skinny jeans were really my best look”.

501’s on the other hand?? Songs were written about women in those jeans, and they’re even more popular now then when they debuted.

The same is true of skincare.

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting a 70+ year old woman who’s skin looks fantastic, you know she wasn’t using 11 steps and 85 serums.

She was kind to her skin, took care of it. Kept it clean, kept it hydrated, and more often than not.. she used a facial oil. (More on keeping it simple -> HERE.)

Ever been to a street dance (Midwest gang!) where the band played too many originals and what started as a lively crowd disappeared into the local bar?

The classics are important, man. And it's the same with skincare.

If you're looking for skin you're proud of... the classics HAVE to be in your lineup.

The Skincare Classics

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting a 70+ year old woman who’s skin looks fantastic, you know she wasn’t doing 11 steps or using 85 serums.

She CARED for her skin by sticking to the classics… Keep it clean, keep it hydrated, and use a facial oil.

These must-have oils below are the literal dream team of skincare.

We meticulously hand selected these oils not only for their individual strengths but for the magic they create when working together.

How Your Skin Works

After some recent conversations with a few of my friends, I’ve come to the conclusion that most people don’t really understand how their skin works.

I mean, it’s not something we’re taught, it’s something most of us learn the hard way

In an effort to help a sister out, here’s a snippet from my “winter skin dissertation” I sent to a friend in a cold weather skin crisis..

Thick, Heavy Creams

Most people reach for a thick cream in the dead of winter, and I totally understand it, but thickness does not equate to protection.

➡️Just like you can buy a thick puffy coat, but if it’s not wind proof you’re still gonna get cold.

Here's What's Happening...

Every minute of every day, our skin is losing moisture.

Really, what we need from our skincare is for it to replenish what we’ve lost and protect our skin barrier. A damaged skin barrier can’t hold moisture in and dehydration is the number 1 ager of skin.

In the winter especially, we get a thick build up of dead skin and THAT is what makes our skin feel dry, flakey and chapped

If we have a thick layer of dead skin, it doesn’t matter what we put on our skin; those products can’t penetrate and do their job well.

Here's What To Do...

☝️First and foremost, get that first layer of dead skin off. That alone will make your other skincare work soooooo MUCH better. I know when it’s cold and windy as F word, exfoliating doesn’t seem like the answer, but it’s only over-exfoliation that will get you into trouble. Exfoliating just 1-2x a week is all you need.

✌️Then really all that’s left to do for healthy beautiful skin is replenish and repair what our skin loses by just being on planet Earth.

The research clearly shows that plant oils help repair the skin barrier and also prevent your skin barrier from losing moisture. Shocker, lol.

🛡️In the winter, Hydrating Beauty Oil and Perfecting Night Oil are going to be your secret weapons.🛡️

Hydrating Beauty Oil is one of the most hydrating oils on planet Earth. It's never greasy, won’t break you out, and is bio-identical to the moisture found in human skin.

Perfecting Night Oil reduces irritation in the gentlest way possible and is known for healing the skin barrier

Plus, they both have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that accelerate the healing process.

Voila. Healthy, happy winter skin.

Bonus tips:

Apply Hydrating Beauty Oil and Perfecting Night Oil to DAMP skin. Either apply them right after a serum before the serum dries down OR use a mister to dampen the skin before applying. That will help pull it into the skin.

If you live in the absolute tundra, cover your face when you go outside! Even living in TN I cover my face if the temperature drops below 35. A thick scarf wrapped up around your face will do the trick or they have cute fuzzy balaclavas on Amazon.

For my Northern girls...

Listen, I might live in Nashville, but I’m from South Dakota(aka: the land of -3 and 50mph wind gusts).

Southern girls can keep their glow all year.

Northern girls are just trying to keep their skin from being ripped off by the cold and wind.

Here are 6 tips for my Northern girls to help you revitalize and protect winter-worn skin…

Cleansing is the most drying skincare step. Using an oil cleanser that won’t further strip your skin goes a long way during the winter months. (More on that -> here.)

I know it doesn’t feel good, but use cold water instead of warm water to wash your face.

Apply Hydrating Beauty Oilto damp skin. Applying it to damp skin will help draw it into the skin for even deeper hydration.

Make sure the last step of your skincare routine is a couple drops of Perfecting Night Oil. I don’t care if you’re still living in the land of make believe and using Oil of Olay. I’m not here to judge, I am here to help. So apply your pink poison (I couldn’t help myself) and then lock it down with Perfecting Night Oil. TRUST ME. In the winter months, when I tell you I SLATHER it on my face, and I keep an extra on my nightstand too! It’s going to heal and seal your skin and protect that precious skin barrier.

Drink lots of water. I know, when I’m cold I don’t want to drink water either, but it helps a lot

Use a humidifier while you sleep.
