HERE'S THE UPDATE
In March of this year Hailey Bieber shared a makeup-free video on TikTok that showed a recent flare-up of POD (perioral dermatitis) on her face.
In August of this year, Joey King shared on TikTok that she had been dealing with POD (perioral dermatitis) for seven months.
Celebrity skin is dropping like flies, and I know why..
In case you don’t know, Perioral dermatitis is a rash-like eruption that occurs most commonly in young, female adults, consisting of small inflammatory papules and pustules or pink, scaly patches around the mouth.
POD is on the rise because you know what else is? ACTIVES.
Coincidence? I think not. (More on skincare actives here.)
I happen to know for a fact that Hailey Bieber and Joey King both use Retinoids, Vitamin C serums, and other actives in their skincare routines.
I also happen to know for a fact that using active ingredients in multiple skincare products is a recipe for a POD break out. And I’m not down with POD. Yeah, you know me.
So please, for the love of God, let us all stop pretending we don’t know what causes Perioral Dermatitis when we do know.
In addition to layering actives, other things that can trigger perioral dermatitis are over-exfoliating (including dermaplaning) and oddly.. fluoride toothpaste.
The #1 way to avoid perioral dermatitis is to have and maintain a strong, healthy skin barrier. (More on that here.) SKINxErin Perfecting Night Oil helps reduce irritation in the gentlest way possible, repairs the skin barrier and also prevents your skin barrier from losing moisture (and won’t clog pores).
I know I sound like a broken record.. but be nice to your skin and it won’t bitch slap you.
Ok? Good talk.
Be nice to your face with SKINxErin...
Last week when I woke up and saw Gollum staring back at me I thought “you’re not ugly, sis.. you’re just getting your period.” And I was right.
So why is it that we all look like shit during our periods?
As luck would have it, there’s an actual scientific reason…
During our period is when estrogen and progesterone levels are bottomed out.
Estrogen is responsible for collagen production, as well as angiogenesis (new blood cells forming).
So when your estrogen is low you’ll notice fine lines and wrinkles become much more prominent. And less blood cell formation means your skin will look dull.
Progesterone, on the other hand, is essential for skin hydration and is a natural diuretic.
So when progesterone is low skin not only feels drier and less firm, but the body also retains more water, leading to bloating and puffiness.
So what can you do to not spend an entire week looking like Gollum?
Start every morning with lymphatic drainage massage. 1 pump of SKINxErin Pre-Cleanse Oil + 2-5 minutes of facial massage = blood flowing and reduced puffiness. Makes a big difference!
Add a couple more drops of Hydrating Beauty Oil AM & PM to combat the dryness and collagen loss.
Along with your period comes increased inflammation. To reduce that inflammation, reduce bloating, and increase blood flow.. Skip the workout and go for a gentle walk instead.
I always tell my Sisterhood Community there is a list of things you should never analyze when you have your period...
▶ your appearance
▶ your weight
▶ your happiness
▶ your mental health
▶ your emotional health
▶ your productivity
▶ your life choices
▶ your bank account
▶ your family
▶ your friends
▶ your significant other
Behold...
A friend relayed this message to me last week…
After looking through the products she was using I noticed that every single product had either an active ingredient or exfoliant in it.
It wasn’t excessive dryness she was dealing with. She had unknowingly damaged her skin barrier to the point it couldn’t retain moisture.
Sis was spending $$$$ on skincare and it was ripping her skin off.
I don’t care how high end a product is or how many influencers recommend it, repeat after me... my face is not a fucking chemistry lab!
While many ingredients are amazing and do amazing things, there are a few common ingredients you do not want to use together…
Glycolic Acid (chemically exfoliates the skin by removing dead skin cells)
AHA/BHA (chemically exfoliates the skin by removing dead skin cells)
Niacinamide (enhances your skin's lipid layer, can cause skin sensitivity, should not be used with other exfoliating ingredients or vitamin c)
Vitamin C (antioxidant that helps fight free radicals, may reduce dark spots, can cause dryness, flaking, and peeling of skin)
Lactic Acid (chemically exfoliates the skin by removing dead skin cells)
Retinol (increases skin cell production, cellular turnover, exfoliates the skin)
These actives in and of themselves are not bad, they can do good work.. but you’re seeing the theme here, yes?
This is a classic case of more is not more.
Here’s a good rule of thumb..
If you have dry or sensitive skin, don’t exfoliate more than 1-2x a week.
If you have normal skin, you can bump it up to 3x a week.
More than that, you’ll be playing a game of “will I wake up with skin tomorrow”, and no one likes that game.
As always, make sure SKINxErin is the last step in your am/pm routine.
Hydrating Beauty Oil floods your skin with non-greasy hydration and regulates oil production while Perfecting Night Oil reduces inflammation, seals in hydration and repairs the skin barrier.
